Solution for Water Shortages
Water covers more than two thirds of the globe, yet only 1-3% of the water is fresh, and even less than that is accessible!
Naturally, there are many solutions and technologies that try to purify and extract water from the oceans and seas, which , of which thermal desalination plants were more successful in the Middle East, and now hybrid or RO-based filtration plants have become widely adapted (Seawater Reverse-Osmosis – SWRO). Hybrids/RO desalination plants, combined with other membrane-based filtration systems, have 3 challenges:
– Reject Brine Production (High TDS Water that Can’t be Filtered Anymore)
– Degrading Efficiency over Time: as the Salinity of the water source increases in Salinity (as the reject brine is dumped back into the sea/ocean)
– Environmental/Ecological Disasters for the Marine Life.
About 10 years ago, before Hollow Fiber was produced at an industrial scale, they used to use flat sheet membranes (instead of tubes) called Spiral Wound membranes.
So we simply replaced the old technology with the new one but the underlying chemical process is the same one that GEi developed… called Vacuum Membrane Distillation… using Vacuum pressure to evaporate water before the water touches the membrane, and instead, the water vapor goes through the membranes without attaching/wetting the surface.
